Installing the Guide
On Your System
Where to Install and
Place Links
Where you install this Guide on your
system is an important decision. It
will be influenced by the size, complexity, and networking capabilities of
your system. To promote employee
awareness of the program and regular use, it is desirable that you:
- Ensure that employees can reach the
information they are looking for with the fewest possible number of
mouse clicks. The Guide is
designed so that users can find any desired information with no more
than three mouse clicks. They
should be able to get to the Guide with only one or at most two clicks.
- Put links to the Guide in places where
employees repeatedly see the links even when not specifically looking
for the program.
The optimal solution is to have an icon
with the label Security Guide on the computer desktop of all personnel, and
to have the program listed in the main Program Menu. This is where it can be seen without
having to look for it, and where users can reach the Guide with only one
click.
An obvious location is a security office
web site, if you have one. Here,
employees must go to the security site before seeing a link to the Guide. They must click twice before reaching
the Guide -- once to reach the security site and another time to open the
Guide. The link should be
prominently displayed on the security home page, not buried further into the
site where the user must click a third or fourth time to find it. The security home page should be
reachable by direct link from the desktop or opening screen.
Links should be placed anywhere that a
user might logically look for one or inadvertently see one. If a link is on the computer desktop,
it should also be the security home page. If it is on the security home page, it
should also be on any subordinate pages where it logically fits. If you have a counterintelligence as
well as a security office, it would certainly be appropriate to have a link
from that site. Is there any
place in the human resources area where it is appropriate to put a link? Or on a training home page? There may be locations where it is
appropriate to add a link to a specific part of the Guide rather than to the
home page.
Technical Issues
The Guide must be installed on a system
that has a browser, Netscape or Microsoft Explorer 3.0, or better. When the user clicks on a link to open
the Guide, the program should automatically find the browser and open it.
The browser does NOT need to be connected
to the Internet.
